At 4:11 p.m. ET on Aug. 14, 2003, Ontario and much of the northeastern U.S. were hit by the largest blackout in North America's history. Electricity was cut to 50 million people, bringing darkness to customers from New York to Toronto to North Bay.
Streetlights went out, subway trains stopped mid-tunnel and refrigeration equipment went dead. And while some electricity consumers had service restored by early the next morning, many areas remained in darkness well into the next day and even the one following.
The cause of the blackout, according to Canada-U.S. joint task force, can be traced back to FirstEnergy Corp. of Ohio. Chaired by Natural Resources Minister Herb Dhaliwal and U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham, the task force tabled its findings in Washington on November 19, 2003.
Other blackouts include:
- The was a significant disruption in the supply of electricity on November 9, 1965, affecting Ontario, Canada and Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, and New Jersey in the United States. Around 25 million people and 80,000 square miles were left without electricity for up to twelve hours.
- A freak early season blizzard on October 13, 1974 caused a major power outage that affected more than a million customers for up to one week in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, Canada.
- On November 19, 1996, a severe ice storm affected the region around Spokane, Washington, and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, causing power outages lasting up to two weeks.
- During the 12-month California electricity crisis of 2000–01, there were regular power failures due to energy shortages.
- On September 4, 2004, five million people in Florida were without power at one point due to Hurricane Frances, one of the most widespread outages ever due to a hurricane.
- On October 24, 2005, Hurricane Wilma caused loss of power for 3.2 million customers in South Florida and Southwest Florida, with hundreds of thousands of customers still powerless a week later and full restoration not complete until November 11.

Some people are not worried about these hardships as they haven't as yet experienced a long term power outage. They say "Why should I waste money on buying a generator?
